My research at Monell
focuses on the chemistry, particularly structure-activity
relationships, of mammalian pheromones and other compounds
involved in chemical communication;
it encompasses three diverse areas: natural product
synthesis, bioorganic chemistry and materials science.
I have continued my interest in bioorganic
chemistry with collaborative programs in the Penn Center
for Molecular Discovery (PCMD). At Monell, in collaboration
with Peter Jurs (Penn
State), I pioneered the use of computerized pattern
recognition techniques for the analysis of primate chemical
communication. Collaborative programs
at the Laboratory for Research on the Structure of Matter
(LRSM) have included the chemistry and physics of novel
liquid crystals and the
fullerenes.
