My research mainly focuses on molecular mechanisms underlying taste perception.
To elucidate the function of genes that are selectively expressed in taste bud cells, I
use transgenic tools, produce animals with mutated genes to perturb normal taste bud
cell physiology, and then assay the effect of these mutations on taste transduction. In
addition, I am also interested in delineating the anatomical relationships between
taste bud cells and their innervating cranial nerve fibers, and defining neuronal
pathways from taste buds to the gustatory cortex.
