I am studying the genetics of taste in both humans and fruit flies (Drosophila melanogaster). Drosophila are a powerful genetic model that can be used to gain rapid insight into human taste processes and behavior. Like humans, Drosophila are omnivores with dietary needs and ingestive controls that appear human-like. Parallel experiments will be conducted in the human and fly, such as phenotyping mutants and correlating extreme taste variants with polymorphisms in taste genes and surrounding regulatory regions
