My primary research interest is to understand the molecular and cellular bases of taste and smell disorders. Although rapid progress has been made in identifying chemosensory receptors and signaling proteins, the mechanisms of chemosensory disorders remain largely unknown. My current research projects include: 1) characterizing pathways of inflammatory cytokines and Toll-like receptors (TLRs) in chemosensory systems; 2) determining the effects of inflammation on taste bud cell degeneration and regeneration; 3) identifying regulatory mechanisms that alter chemosensory signaling in animal models of inflammation; and 4) investigating the interactions between inflammatory pathways and taste receptor-mediated signaling pathways in enteroendocrine cells in the gut.
