My laboratory studies chemosensory communication between
the gut and brain. The stomach and intestine contain a host of chemosensory
systems and, relative to the current understanding of the taste system
of the mouth, these pathways are not well characterized. Evidence suggests
that chemical signaling from the gut plays a role in feeding behavior,
nutrition, nausea, vomiting, and gastrointestinal physiology. This
research program may lead to a better understanding of the control
of appetite in normal and disease states.
