Individual differences abound in human olfaction. I have been exploring contributions to this variation, which include genetics, development, sex, aging, environment and experience. In my laboratory, animal models of human specific anosmia (selective olfactory deficits) have been developed and are being studied at similar levels of investigation. Individual sensitivity to intranasal irritants and their interactions with olfaction also are being explored to delineate quality coding within the nasal trigeminal system. In a third area of research, we are working closely with chemists in the laboratory of Dr. Preti on programs that explore issues related to adaptation and cross-adaptation in studies of structure-activity relationships, especially as they relate to malodors, for example, those originating from agricultural endeavors. We also continue our long-lasting studies on chemical communication and have been focusing our efforts on humans.
