The Mastertaste-Manheimer Dinner and Lecture

The Manheimer family initiated the annual Dinner in 1976 when Stephen Manheimer approached Monell's founder, Morley Kare, to ask how his family could support Monell's endeavors in a way that would be directly relevant to the Center's scientists—and so a tradition was born. In 1989, the Manheimer Lectureship Award was instituted to recognize the career achievements of an outstanding researcher in the chemosensory sciences. In 2005, the Manheimer family sold their business to Mastertaste, which continues to proudly support the annual event, now celebrating its 31st year.

2007 Mastertaste-Manheimer Lectureship Awardee

This year's Mastertaste-Manheimer Awardee is Dr. Linda Buck, Full Member in the Division of Basic Sciences at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and an Affiliate Professor of Physiology and Biophysics at the University of Washington. She also is an Investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. Dr. Buck has dedicated her career to understanding the physiological mechanisms underlying odor and pheromone perception. Along with Richard Axel, she was awarded the 2004 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their groundbreaking discoveries of odorant receptors. Dr. Buck’s laboratory also investigates the molecular mechanisms that regulate lifespan, maturation and aging.
