Monell-Jefferson Taste & Smell Clinic
The
Monell-Jefferson Taste & Smell Clinic is the core facility of Monell's
Chemosensory Clinical Research Center, funded by the National Institute on
Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD). The clinic is located in
the Department of Otolaryngology, Head & Neck Surgery of Thomas Jefferson
University Hospital, and evaluates selected patients on referral from their
healthcare provider. If you are interested in being considered for evaluation,
please call 215-955-5652.
General
information about smell and taste disorders can be obtained at
http://www.nidcd.nih.gov/health/smelltaste/, a site maintained by
the NIDCD. Specific questions may be directed to . However, although it is our desire at the Monell Center to provide
as much information as possible about smell and taste disorders to the general
public, please understand that this is not the primary mission of the Center.
At times, the number of inquiries we receive and/or staff shortages make it
impossible for us to respond to every one. When you submit questions, please
include as much detail as possible about the nature of your disorder and its
history, since this will affect the priority your inquiry receives. Please also
provide a mailing address.
Finally, we
should note that there are relatively few forms of smell or taste problems for
which the underlying cause is known and treatable. The most common of these is
loss of smell (and food flavor perception-much of which is mediated through the
sense of smell) as a result of ongoing inflammatory disease in the nose or
sinuses. Therefore, if you have experienced a loss of smell, it is important
for you to seek evaluation by an otolaryngologist (ear, nose and throat
specialist) to determine if your loss may be treatable. |
