SFC Houses Library at Monell

Collection includes rare books on flavor science

PHILADELPHIA (April 29, 2010) – The Society of Flavor Chemists (SFC) and the Monell Center have signed a formal agreement to house the SFC’s library at Monell. As part of the agreement, the SFC and a Monell benefactor contributed funds to purchase custom-made bookcases designed especially for the collection.

Consisting of over 400 books and other publications related to flavors, flavoring ingredients and the flavor industry, the SFC collection was established in 1992. The library provides scientific, educational and technological information on flavor chemistry. Many of the materials are rare and found in only a few collections worldwide.

The SFC collection is housed within Monell’s Morley R. Kare Library, which contains one of the world’s largest collects of books and journals focused on the senses of taste and smell. Dr. Kare, founding Director of the Monell Center, generously supported the library’s development. The Kare Library now includes his personal collection of books.

“The libraries of the two organizations augment each other, producing a win-win situation by creating a leading library dealing with all aspects of flavor that is housed in one location,” said Alfred E. Goossens, Chair of the SFC Library Committee.

The Society of Flavor Chemists is a nonprofit organization that engages exclusively in scientific, educational and technological information activities towards the advancement of the art and science of flavors and its ingredients.
