The Monell Chemical Senses Center is a not-for-profit research institute in West Philadelphia. Our research programs include studies on taste, smell, and sensory perception, as well as research to understand human health, development and behavior.

GENERAL PUBLIC
Chemosensory Perception Study
- One visit (2.5h) during which you will be asked to smell and taste different natural products.
- Eligible to healthy adults (men and women) ages 18-40 that do not have any known heart condition. Only people with a BMI within a certain range will be included in the study. Compensation: $30 will be paid after completion to compensate for time and inconvenience.

Aversive Olfactory Learning
- Looking for volunteers for behavioral and MRI studies.
- These studies will involve paring an aversive stimulus (uncomfortable sensation) with both sights and odors in order to investigate how we learn about sensory stimuli in our everyday environment.

Olfactory Learning Study
- One visit (2 hours) during which your arousal levels to different odors will be measured. We may also ask you to discriminate and to detect different smells.
- Eligible to healthy adults (men and women) ages 18-40 that do not have any known heart condition. Weak shocks and either an intranasal irritant or a puff of air to your eye will be given to enhance learning.
- Compensation: $20 will be paid after completion to compensate for time and inconvenience.

Social Olfactory Cues and Stress Reduction: Behavioral Study
- Siblings (brother and sister pairs) needed for a research study for study looking at how odors affect our physiological state and our psychological functioning
- Three sessions, each may last up to 2.5 hours long.
- The tests will take place at the Monell Center (located between 34th and 36th Streets on Market Street).
- Open to sibling pairs (brother-brother, sister-sister, brother-sister) who are blood relatives.

Neuronal Processing of Odor Categories
- Two visits are required.
- Visit 1 is a 1.5h training session.
- Visit 2 is a 1.5h session where we will investigate how your brain
responds to odors and tastes using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI)
scanning. - Eligible to healthy adults (men and women) ages 18-40.

How Your Brain Processes Sensory Information
- In this study we will measure your brain responses to smells, sounds, sights, and tastes by placing a cap containing recording electrodes on your head (EEG).
- Eligible to healthy adults (men and women) ages 18-35.

STUDIES FOR WOMEN
Healthy, Female Volunteers Needed for Paid Research Study
- We are seeking paid volunteers for a study that examines the effects of an FDA-approved medication on insulin and glucose levels in healthy females.
- You will be reimbursed for your participation.
- You may qualify if you are: – Female, – Age 18-40, – Normal Weight, – Currently taking daily hormonal contraceptives, – No other prescription medications except birth control.
- Study involves 2 outpatient visits and 1 inpatient stay of 12 days at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.
- Study also requires taking an FDA-approved medication for 9 days and two MRS exams (MRI on the liver).
- We will also be drawing blood and measuring activity levels.
