2002 Monell Research Apprentices
The following highlights some of the high school and college students who are participating in Monell's 2002 Research Apprenticeship Program.

Rena |
| Aditya, a senior at University of Pennsylvania, majoring in biology, spent his first summer here working with Dr. John Teeter and fellow student Maria. His research consisted of doing EDGs on flathead catfish to see their response to various amino acids. He states, "I loved my time here. I'd definitely pursue research." Aditya plans to continue his education in graduate school. |
Talia is a junior at Penn State University. This was her third summer working under the guidance of Ms. Donna Kupniewski. In the past she has learned what it takes to run an animal facility. This year she focused on animal care and developing an emergency disaster plan for the animal facility. |
Rena is entering her junior year at Penn State University where she is majoring in animal bioscience. Rena continued her work with Dr. Nancy Rawson. This summer she performed in situ hybridization and examined the results under a microscope. She plans to attend medical school and pursue a career as a pediatric surgeon. |

| Osama spent his first summer at the Center working with Dr. Russell Keast, Dr. Paul Breslin and Mr. Thomas Canty. One of his responsibilities was preparing stimuli for a study on bitter suppression. A student at Central High School, Osama will be conducting his science fair project at Monell this year. |
Josalyn continued to work on her project studying the retention of odors on painted surfaces under the supervision of Dr. Nancy Rawson. Josalyn will be a junior at J. Bartram High School for Human Services this fall. She feels that working at Monell she is "more interested in all types of research." |
Aishah is a junior majoring in chemistry at Susquehanna University. This was her third year at Monell and under the supervision of Dr. Michael Tordoff and Diane Pilchak, Aishah's research focused finding the gene in mice responsible sensing for calcium appetite deficiency. She hopes to specialize in a surgical veterinary field. |

Marcus |
| Mayla recently graduated from Merion Mercy Academy and will be starting Spelman College in the fall, where she plans to major in psychology. This was Mayla's third year working under Dr. Julie Mennella. Her responsibilities included testing children and their mothers to determine the difference in their odor preferences and ability to identify different odors. |
Jhamirah is currently a senior at Central High School. She spent her second summer working under the supervision of Dr. Julie Mennella studying alcohol elimination in lactating versus non-lactating women. She won first place in the Pa Jr Academy of Science fair (state level) and is the PA delegate selected to attend the National Youth Summer Science Camp in West Virginia. |
Marcus recently finished his freshman year at Morehouse College majoring in chemistry. This summer was Marcus' second at Monell and he worked with Dr. Smith determining a method for examining urine extracts with HPLC. Marcus is also a recipient of a stipend from the Emma & Joe Adama Public Service Institute at Morehouse College. He plans to go on to graduate school. |

| LaShauna is now a sophomore at Temple University where she is studying nursing. She was mentored by Dr. Charles Wysocki and Ms. Jennifer Louie on a project testing farm odors with LMS scales. During the summer La Shauna learned a couple important lessons: "There are many choices out there and I can do research even as a nurse." |
Nancy worked with Dr. Yolanda Martins and Dr. Marci Pelchat this summer on a project to determine the pain stimuli for future work on pain tolerance. Nancy will be entering her senior year this fall at Central High School. After graduation she plans to attend college. |
William is a senior at the University of Pennsylvania where he majors in biochemistry. This year was his second at Monell and he worked with Dr. George Preti analyzing biological odors from human and non-human mammals. William plans to continue his education and receive his master's degree. |

| Daniel has recently completed his first year at Cornell University, where he is majoring in chemistry. Daniel spent his second summer at Monell identifying and characterizing the feline accessory olfactory bulb, under the mentorship of Dr. Fritz Lischka. He plans to continue his education and attend graduate school. |
Eloisa is a senior at Penn State University where she studies animal bioscience. Eloisa has now completed her seventh year working with Dr. Kunio Yamazaki at Monell. She continued her research on the role of genetics in olfactory communication of animals. This summer her work focused on the behavior responses to MHC odortype. Eloisa aspires to be a veterinarian. |
Darryl worked during the summer under the mentorship of Dr. Alexander Bachmanov and Maria Theodorides. His research involved studying long-term voluntary intake of ethanol in mice. Darryl will be entering his sophomore year this fall at J. R. Masterman Laboratory and Demonstration High School. After graduation he plans to pursue a career in pediatrics. |

| Deshe spent her first summer at Monell working under the supervision of Dr. George Preti, analyzing the compounds of mushroom compost odors with the GC. Because of her work here, she is even more interested in research. Deshe will be a senior at Willingboro High School in the fall and plans to go to college, majoring in chemistry, upon graduation. |
Rachel, is a senior at Philadelphia University, where she majored in psychology. She worked under the mentorship of Dr. Russell Keast on a taste study dealing with interactions between bitter substances, menthol, and aromatic additives. She writes, "I achieved a clearer understanding of what goes into research and how important is it." |
Tiffany is a recent graduate of West Chester University where she studied psychology on a pre-med track. This summer Tiffany returned to the Center to continue working with mentor Dr. Julie Mennella. Tiffany had the opportunity to conduct a human study and found that she enjoys working with children. |

| Eboni is a recent graduate of Ursinus College and will be entering the Freshman class at John's Hopkins Medical School this fall. This year working with mentor Dr. Russell Keast, her project was trying to find a quicker test to identify L-glutamate insensitive humans. This was her fourth year working at the Center and has reinforced her decision to continue doing research. |
Jess is a recent high school graduate and will be starting her Freshman year at University of Michigan- Ann Arbor this fall where she plans to major in psychology. She spent her first summer at the Center working with mentor Dr. Pam Dalton on a study looking at ocular hyperemia. Because of her work here at Monell, Jess is now considering a career in experimental psychology. |
Geraldine spent her first summer at the Center working with Dr. Pamela Dalton. Her research consisted of designing an apparatus to test the odor-retention properties of various paint coatings. She states, "I am now more interested in exploring science research." Geraldine is a senior at the University of Pennsylvania where she majors in systems engineering and economics. She plans to continue her education in graduate school. |

Maida |
| Minna spent her first summer here working with Dr. Dani Reed on a project doing PCRs and testing for taste receptor genes across many species of animals. Because of her research here, she "became more interested health research." Minna is a junior at Springside High School and plans to go to school to be a pediatrician. |
Maria is a junior at Southampton College LIU where she majors in marine science biology. During her summer here Maria worked with Dr. John Teeter and fellow student Aditya, testing the response of flathead catfish olfactory bulbs. Based on her research her, she reports, "I would definitely like a research career." |
Maida is a senior at Pennsylvania State University, majoring in biology. Maida has completed seven years as an apprentice at Monell under the mentorship of Dr. Pamela Dalton. Her work focuses on olfactory psychophysical methods. Because of her years at Monell, Maida has been able to help other students who also participate in this summer. |

| Annette is a recent graduate of Temple University where she was a biochemistry major. This summer she worked under the supervision of Dr. Bruce Bryant on a project to determine a working to distinguish neurons from non-neuronal cells with neuron specific tublin antibodies. Annette plans to go on to medical school. |
Kelly just finished her senior year at Cornell University where she is majored in human development. She apprenticed under Dr. Julie Mennella. Her project involved testing mothers and their children and comparing their taste preferences for sweet taste. |
Eric spent his summer at the Center working under the supervision on Drs. Charles Horn, Mark Friedman and Hong Ji on several different projects. Eric will be a senior at the University of Pennsylvania this fall where he is studying the biological basis of behavior. He plans to continue on and get his DDS. Eric comments that "Monell is a great place for beginning scientists." |

| Paul will enter his senior year at Bensalem High School this fall. Paul spent his first summer at Monell learning and performing many immunohistochemical techniques under the mentorship of Dr. Bruce Bryant. He states, "I gained priceless knowledge of the microscopic world around me and its purposes." Paul plans to attend college and become a dentist. |
Brad spent his first summer at Monell working under the supervision of Drs. Paul Breslin, Kunio Yamazaki, and Paul Wise on several different projects involving animal and human testing. Brad will be a senior a Rowan University this fall. |
