2004 Monell Research Apprentices
The following highlights some of the high school and college students who participated in Monell's 2004 Research Apprenticeship Program. Each student worked in a laboratory of a Monell scientist. At the end of the summer, they presented their research findings in a poster presentation which was open to scientists, staff and family members.

Angelica |
Abigail |
Mohamed |
| Angelica spent her first summer at the Center
working with Dr. Charles Wysocki and Ms. Jennifer Louie on differentiating body odors between hydrolized and non-hydrolized sweat.
Her responsibilities included preparing test materials and testing subjects.
Angelica will be entering her junior year at Central High School. |
Abigail spent her summer at Monell studying bitter taste genetics in humans.
Working in the laboratory of Dr. Dani Reed, Abigail performed DNA extraction, PCR, and DNA sequencing.
She will be a freshman this fall at Wheaton College, majoring in psychobiology. |
Mohamed returned this summer to continue working on the responses of starlings to predator and non-predator odors, with Dr. Arla Hile.
While working at Monell, he has been able to learn more about animal care and to conduct test trials. Mohamed is a senior at Central High School. |

Chris |
Marquia |
Jhamirah |
| Chris, a senior at Washington and Lee University is majoring in neuroscience. This summer he worked on a research project on wavelet and fractal analysis of ECG and EGG response to mal-odor stimulus in humans.
Chris was mentored on this project by Dr. Pamela Dalton. |
Marquia returned to Monell for a second summer, working in the Mennella Laboratory with Dr. Yanina Pepino. Her responsibilities included testing infants and scoring their tests.
She is a junior at Drexel University is majoring in biomedical science |
Jhamirah spent her fourth summer at Monell continuing her work with Dr. Julie Mennella. This summer her research focused on children's odor preferences.
Jhamirah entered her sophomore year at the University of Pennsylvania this fall, where she is majoring in biology. |

Marcus |
Jennifer |
Marena |
| Marcus entered his senior year at Morehouse College majoring in chemistry.
This summer was Marcus' fourth at Monell and he worked with Drs. George Preti, Jae Kwak, and Peter Yang on a project to identify and profile the composition of human body odor. |
Jennifer returned to Monell for her second summer. This summer she worked in the Mennella Laboratory with Dr. Cathy Forestell.
Her project examines the effect of early feeding history on taste preferences in infants. Jennifer entered her senior year at JR Masterman High School in the fall. |
Marena returned to Monell after a summer working in a laboratory at Stanford University, where she is a junior majoring in biology. This was Marena's second summer working at Monell. She resumed her research with Dr. Stuart McCaughey on calcium appetite and genetic control of taste preferences.
Her responsibilities included caring for and breeding mice, as well as genotyping the mice with PCR. |

Raymond |
Darryl |
Natasha |
| Raymond returned to the Center for his second summer working with Dr. Xia Li and Ms. Weihua Li on the genetic variation of human TAS1R2 taste receptor.
He ran PCR as well as used computer software to analyze sequencing data.
Raymond began his senior year at JR Masterman High School this fall. |
Darryl spent his third summer in the program under the mentorship of Dr. Alexander Bachmanov and Ms. Maria Theodorides.
His research involved taste and olfaction phenotyping in mice.
Darryl entered his Senior year this fall at JR Masterman High School. |
Natasha, a senior at Drexel University, is majoring in biology. Natasha spent her summer at Monell working with Dr. Nancy Rawson and Dr. Fritz Lischka.
Her project focuses on the effect of a genetic disorder (MPS-I) on olfactory anatomy. Her duties included sectioning tissue from animals and performing histological and immunocytochemical staining. |
