Osama recently graduated from Central High School and will be attending the University of Pennsylvania in the fall where he will major in biology. |
Wee spent his summer at Monell as a Howard Hughes intern working on a joint project between Monell and Swarthmore College. As a Howard Hughes fellow, he worked closely with Dr. George Preti from Monell and characterized the odorants emitted by Crested Auklet bird feathers. Wee regularly performed SPME collection with GC/MS analysis. Wee will be a senior at Swarthmore College this fall, where he is a biology major. After graduation, Wee plans to attend medical school then pursue a career with a research component.

Amaka |
Marcus |
Sarah |
| Amaka, a recent graduate from Upper Darby High School, will be attending Temple University in the fall, majoring in biology. Amaka came to Monell this summer to work with Drs. George Preti, Peter Yang and Jae Kwak on a project determining salivary levels of trimethylamine in people with trimethylaminuria. Her responsibilities included performing solid phase micro extraction and running samples in the GC. Amaka remarks, "I achieved my goal of doing hands on research." |
This fall, Marcus will be in the senior class at Morehouse College where he majors in chemistry. Upon graduation, he plans to attend pharmacy school. This summer was Marcus' fifth at Monell and he worked with Drs. George Preti, Jae Kwak, and Peter Yang on a project that aims to identify and profile the composition of human body odor. He will be a coauthor on a peer-reviewed manuscript which describes some of their findings. |
Sarah spent her first summer at Monell working with Dr. Pamela Dalton. Her research project explored the factors that people use to make health-related risk judgments about the perception of odorous chemicals. A recent graduate from Rumson Fair Haven Regional High School, she will be attending Yale University in the fall. While she is still undecided as to her major, her experience at Monell has lead to her consider more science and research majors. |

Lakhina |
Raymond |
Leen |
| Lakhina worked under the mentorship of Dr. Nancy Rawson where she analyzed a large set of data from experiments using human olfactory cell cultures to study the cell and molecular basis for schizophrenia and bipolar depression. Her responsibilities included conducting high throughput screening experiments and immunohistochemistry. She comments that she "was able to easily talk, ask questions, or discuss ideas with other scientists or students." Lakhina will be entering her junior year at Strath Haven High School. |
Raymond returned to the Center for his third summer working with Drs. Xia Li and Dani Reed on re-sequencing the hT1R gene family. His duties included the complete sequencing of full length cDNA for members of TASIR family of receptors. "I learned new laboratory techniques and strengthened old ones," he stated. Raymond is a recent graduate from JR Masterman High School and will be entering the freshman class of Columbia University this fall. |
Leen is a sophomore at the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia majoring in pharmacy. This summer she worked at the Center with Drs. Nancy Rawson and Fritz Lischka. Her research focused on histological studies of the cat olfactory epithelium in Mucopolysaccharidosis Type I diseased cats. Her responsibilities included sectioning, staining, and analysis of tissue. Leen comments, "my experience here strengthened my belief that what I want to do lies in the science field."

Aleida |
Tien |
Tamika |
| Aleida studied sweet preferences in children under the mentorship of Dr. Julie Mennella and Ms. Janice Kennedy. Aleida helped with test preparation and assisted in the testing of human subjects. She presented her research findings during the final symposium in her project entitled "Sensitivity and Preference for Sweet Tastes in Children and Adults." Aleida is a recent graduate of the Northeast High School Magnet Program and will be attending Temple University in the fall, where she plans to major in biology. |
Tien spent her second summer at Monell working with Drs. George Preti, Jae Kwak, and Peter Yang. She assisted on the chemical analysis of volatile organic compounds from normal human biological fluids. Tien used the GC-FPD and GC-MS for this research. She found that .the more I get involved in my project, the more interesting it is.. She recently graduated from Northeast High School and will be attending Penn State University this fall, where she will major in biochemistry and molecular biology. |
Tamika spent her summer working in the laboratory of Dr. Pamela Dalton. She worked on several projects with a focus on human olfaction. Her primary project has been collecting data for a study evaluating changes in chemosensory function among World Trade Center workers and volunteers in the post-9/11 days. She is currently testing a matched-group of workers (firefighters, construction workers) who did not have exposure to the mixture of chemicals at the WTC site. Tamika is a junior at Drexel University, where she is majoring in Chemical Engineering.
