Marcus is a recipient of a grant from the Emma & Joe Adams Public Service Institute at Morehouse College. He future plans include pharmacy school.

LaShauna
Jenny
Hadiza
LaShauna is a junior at Rutgers University. LaShuana spent her third year working with mentors Dr. Charles Wysocki and Ms. Jennifer Louie on a project looking at trigeminal odor thresholds between sexes. Her work at the Center has led her to change her major to psychology and shown her that she is "grad school material".

Jenny is a senior at Wissahickon High School. She apprenticed in the laboratory of Drs. Xia Li and Sasha Bachmanov. Their research project compared the gene sequence in sweet receptor genes in different primate species. Jenny plans to go to college to study neuroscience. Her work this summer has led her to consider a career in research.

Hadiza recently came to the United States from Nigeria. She is a freshman at Temple University studying neuroscience. She spent her summer working with Dr. Stuart McCaughey analyzing taste reactivity in calcium depleted rats. Her time in the program has strengthened her interest in neuroscience.

Nancy
Jennifer
Jeanie
Nancy worked with Dr. Marci Pelchat this summer on a project to determine whether sweet and savory foods affect pain sensitivity. Nancy is a recent graduate from Central High School and will be attending Princeton University in the fall, where she will major in chemical engineering.

Jennifer worked with Dr. Liquan Huang and Ms. Lynn Vo on a project analyzing gene expression from mouse taste cells. She comments "I am able to digest new concepts and utilize them." Jennifer will be a junior this fall at J. R. Masterman High School. Upon graduation Jennifer plans to study biochemistry in college.

Jeanie attends the University of Pennsylvanie where she is studying the biological basics of behavior. She spent the summer working the laboratory of Dr. George Preti where she studied the influence of metabolic disorders on human body odors. Jeanie plans to pursue a career in medicine.

Elizabeth
Raymond
Albert
Elizabeth is starting her senior year at Swarthmore College and is conducting research for her senior thesis here at Monell. She is working with Dr. Arla Hile, investigating the sense of smell in birds. Elizabeth's research will tell us more about how birds use their sense of smell (which is actually quite good), and also help us to control bird behaviors when birds become a problem for farmers.

Raymond worked with Dr. Xia Li on a project that compared chimpanzee's taste receptors with those of humans. His project will be presented at several science fairs this coming year. Raymond reports that his experience "made me more interested (in research) because there is a lot of hands-on work involved." Raymond is a junior at J. R. Masterman High School and plans to attend college after graduation.

Albert, a student at Drexel University, spent his summer working with Drs. Paul Wise and Chuck Wysocki on a project studying the inheritability of sensitivity to sour taste. He traveled to Ohio for the annual "Twins Days Festival" to conduct some of their research. He plans to attend graduate school and become a Physician's Assistant.

Justin
Kush
Rajeev
Justin spent his first summer here working with Dr. Sasha Bachmanov and Ms. Maria Theodorides conducting olfactory phenotype testing in mice. He presented this research in several science fairs in the past year. Justin will be a junior at Central High School in the fall.

Kush will be a junior at Central High School this fall. He spent his summer working with Dr. Nancy Rawson on a project studying immunohistochemistry on olfactory cells of cats and humans. Kush has had the opportunity to present this research in several science fairs this past year. He plans to persue a career in medicine.
