In addition to the Monell newsletter, teachers and students can obtain more information about the chemical senses for science fair projects or classroom materials by visiting the following websites.

Smell and Taste Links

Neuroscience for Kids - Neuroscience for Kids has been created for all students and teachers who would like to learn about the nervous system.

Newton's Apple - Seek out a connection between our senses of taste and smell.

Smell and the Olfactory System - The smell, or olfactory system can distinguish thousands of odors. Scientists have identified a large gene family that they believe codes for odor binding sites, or receptors, in the olfactory lining of the nose. In the olfactory bulb, information from these receptors is organized into patterns that the brain may interpret as different odors. These and other discoveries are leading to important insights about human behavior and providing hope for treating those with a diminished or lost sense of smell.

Pheromones - Evidence clearly indicates that a pheromone system exists, in insects at least. The question of whether the basic chemical communication exists in mammals has been harder to determine. An increasing number of studies, however, is showing that pheromones play a role in many species, including humans. The discoveries may provide a better understanding of mammalian communication, and also could lead to the development of new types of birth control or treatments to boost fertility.

Taste Detectors - For years, the molecular underpinnings of taste have been elusive. But now several studies are helping shed new light on this sense. Most recently, researchers uncovered evidence of certain proteins that recognize some of the flavor-producing chemicals in food and launch the taste signals that head to the brain for interpretation. The research is helping scientists understand how the brain interprets taste signals and may lead to methods that can enhance or block flavors of foods, beverages and medications.

Taste Intensity - Scientists savor a new area of research. Evidence shows that the sense of taste is more complex than previously believed. One set of findings suggests that humans inherit different levels of tasting ability. These levels may influence food preferences and, in turn, health status.
